Then in 2008: Michelle Obama‘s premiere as the 1st lady. The prettier half of the power couple of all power couples, the President of the United States Barack Obama and Mrs. Obama make quite an attractive team. They remind me of the Black version of the old TV show Hart To Hart.
Mrs. Obama is a woman admired for her strength and yet still being down-to-earth. She has a very functional fashion sense which I think is conservative but classic. Even when it comes to her hair.
I’m sure there are many demands and constraints that must come along with the privileges and responsibilities of being the 1st lady. For certain, life as you knew it is changed forever. You go from living as a private citizen to being instantly propelled into the public eye. Things must seem to change overnight with the constant media mix of either being admired or criticized for your fashion choices. I wonder if Michelle sometimes thinks “ Man, yesterday it was just regular me and no one cared what I was wearing”.
Well, I know for a fact that a change in hair style, like getting bangs, would be otherwise rather insignificant for the majority of women in America. Michelle Obama debuted her new hairstyle with bangs just in time for her husband’s 2nd inauguration ceremony, which obviously was very strategic and I might add quite successful. I think Mrs. Obama’s new hairstyle looks fabulous!
It’s short enough to be sassy and long enough to be versatile. Did you notice that her hairstylist changed her hair slightly for the evening ceremonies? Her stylist added some flips for texture and flair. And ever since, Michelle Obama’s bangs have been a national and cultural hot topic.
It’s a very gutsy move to a make a significant hairstyle change right before a special event. As a hairstylist, unless I know my client very well I usually don’t recommend making a bold change in hairstyle when the stakes are so high for events like weddings, proms, and…uhhh… historic Presidential Inaugurations… where there is no do over. It’s one time only or in this case, twice.
Many women will be now be requesting that their hairstylists give them ” the Michelle Obama haircut”. For those of you, who may need to have a more precise description of the in-demand hairstyle you can tell your stylist that you’d like a layered bob with full-bodied bangs.
